Using the “100% Model” to Pump Up Water Donations for Africa

When Scott Harrison founded charity: water, he was aware that the Silicon Valley CEOs who were his target donors would be cynical about any charity work. To counter this, he created two separate bank accounts: one for administrative costs and one for drilling wells and hand pumps throughout Africa. According to the New York Times, this “100% Model” has been a huge success: charity: water is now the largest nonprofit in the United States focused on water.

Through the “100% Model,” Harrison is able to guarantee that every dollar donated to charity: water that is earmarked for water-based endeavors is used in that way. water: charity doesn’t actually drill the well, but they offer their high-profile donors a chance to visit sites to see the fruits of their donations.
